<March for You> Finally Completed
Again on April 17, 1982, Kim Jong-Ryul took his guitar and his songs to the house of Hwang Seok-Young. Hwang Seok-Young started off by asking what should they, the culture band, do for the second anniversary of Gwangju People’s Uprising. Kim Jong-Ryul reminds that they were standing on the spot where Yoon Sang-Won and Park Ki-Sun got the spiritual marriage on the February of that year. After a while of discussion, they decides to make a song, a shamanistic ritual song, to soothe the souls of the people who were shot by the marital forces while shouting democracy. (….)

At the time, all the people thought that Hwang Seok-Young had written the lyrics of <March for You>. However, the lines of the lyrics were taken from the poetries of Baek Ki-wan, such as ‘Passed You’ and ‘Our Chorus,’ so the song book started to specify the lyric was written by Hwang Seok-Young. It was officialized when the revised edition of the Baek Gi Wan’s poetry book <<Younger Days>> was published which includes the long poem <Motbinari: to the young dancers of the south>. This poem takes the form of insert song and the entire verse is almost identical to the <March for You>.

On the fallen and blood stained ground
formed like dews are the indignant stories
and the weeping sound of decreased fighters.
Left no name no glory
but the passionate pledge of marching whole life.
Though the fight valiant, flag ripped apart
Even the time has gone by
flowing river still remembers
My friend, let us stand firm till the new day come,
shout to uprise so even the reeds in the fields stands.
